iiNet plays Cupid by helping those looking for love online

1 February 2012 - iiNet, Australia's second largest DSL broadband provider, has released an online dating-themed fact sheet to help those looking for love avoid a broken heart, a broken computer or a dwindling bank balance this Valentine's Day.

iiNet's Compliance Manager, Rebecca Moonen, said the latest fact sheet in the Online Safety Series provides some useful tips for those looking for their dream date online.

"Online dating is a convenient alternative when looking for love, however, as with any online activity it pays to be safety conscious," Ms Moonen said.

"We're spreading the love this month and we encourage everyone to help us by downloading our factsheet and sharing it with family and friends."

  • Start with an open mind and a secure device - prep your computer or device so it's as safe as can be by installing anti-virus and firewall software. Always browse using a secure wireless network and remember to log out of dating sites and never save your password when using a public terminal.
  • Go for the popular types - get picky about the online dating site you sign up to by researching and choosing a well-known site. A quick check of their database size will help you suss out how many fish are in the sea.
  • It all began with an… email - create a separate email account for your online dating profile and choose an email address and profile name that doesn't include personally identifiable information and isn't linked to your Facebook or place of employment.
  • Sealed with a kiss (and a scam) - Internet scams can easily turn a love story into a nightmare, so ignore any junk mail that lands in your online dating inbox. Never send money or offer financial assistance to anyone you've met online and report anyone who has asked you to hand over cash or other valuable goods.

iiNet's 'Finding love online - a guide to safely searching for that dream date' fact sheet can be downloaded from iiNet's Online Safety website.

iiNet's Online Safety Series was introduced to help Australians become more aware of safe practices when surfing the web. Each month, information will be released and made available for download from the iiNet website. Topics covered by the safety series include social networking, online shopping, phishing emails and password security.
