Frans Thyssen's ship was the Gulden Zeepard (Golden Seahorse).
He reached the coast near Cape
Leeuwin in 1627. Instead of sailing north, he turned south; and
then east along the southern coastline. He sailed for some 1,600 kilometres
before he decided to turn back. Thyssen was not at all impressed by what
he saw. The land was obviously barren, and the natives had nothing with
which to trade. His bad report was one of many that persuaded the Dutch
not to settle the new land their captains were discovering. |
