An old Bailey judge yesterday scaled down a sentence on a husband who raped his wife, saying the offence within marriage was not always as serious as raping a stranger - Julie Bindel of Justice For Women said This is telling men their wives are their property, they can treat women as they wish, and if they rape their wives they will be treated sympathetically by the courts or get away with it. Rape is rape. And many women say being raped by their husband is worse than being raped by a stranger because it is a breach of trust.
