If the Australian Government were to use the calici virus correctly, there would be no need to ever release myxoma virus again. I have personally observed a release of calici by the Department of Agriculture Rural Lands Protection Board. The virus was released in 30 adjoining acreage properties in my neighbourhood (rural Rouse Hill). The virus was quick acting, effective and humane. However, no follow up was done to eradicate the kittens who survived due to the natural immunity of the young. These kittens, old enough to survive without mum, were soon of breeding age themselves. A second release of the virus 8 weeks after the first would have avoided this re-population. Surely, the Department of Agriculture is aware of this. Why then, must pet owners suffer through the constant re-ntroduction of Myxomatosis, when the government already has a powerfully effective tool, in calici, at their disposal? Why are they unable to use calici as it is intended to be used? Congratulations to the House Rabbit Society of Australia Inc. for its efforts to assist pet owners in their quest for the Myxomatosis vaccine. Every bit helps. It is important that the Australian Government is constantly reminded of our need to protect our beloved rabbits. They must be aware: We love rabbits.
