"Dr Smith's involvement with the calicivirus began in 1972 when he was given the task of exploring the possibility of diseases in the ocean which might be transmittable to people working in the ocean with marine mammals and in other areas. The US navy was interested in the answer to this question."

Interview with Dr Alvin Smith concerning his long time research involving Caliciviruses

Unusual virus identified in aborted calf (2002) (Co-authors on the study just published include researchers from AVI BioPharma, a private company, and Dr. David Matson, a medical doctor at the Center for Pediatric Research in Norfolk, Va.)

Excerpt from the journal of Clinical Infectious Diseases 1998;26:434-9 "In Vitro Isolation and Characterization of a Calicivirus Causing a Vesicular Disease of the Hands and Feet" by A. W. Smith, E. S. Berry,, D. E. Skilling, J. E. Barlough, S. E. Poet, T. Berke, J. Mead. and D. O. Matson saying that a calicivirus previously isolated from the flippers of northern fur seals [San Miguel sea lion virus serotype 5 (SMSV-5)] is now a human pathogen.
