what do you need to do to be protected?

We've set the default to automatically detect and delete spam and email viruses from your iiNet email account. However, if you choose to tag your spam, you can update your settings any time.

If, for some reason, you prefer not to take advantage of these free services, you can follow the simple instructions below to turn off or modify the service.

1. login
Login to Toolbox with your username and password.

2. select your account
Find your account under Internet Account Type. Click on the Account Tools drop down box and click on Virus, Spam, Forward Email.

3. update your settings
Your settings will automatically be set to enable email virus and spam protection. You can choose to enable or disable your Email AntiSpam and Email AntiVirus filters at any time.

When the Email AntiSpam Filter is enabled, you can also choose whether you'd like spam to be deleted before it reaches your inbox or tagged for you to review and delete.

4. repeat
Your AntiSpam & AntiVirus are specific to each mailbox. Repeat steps 2 and 3 for each additional mailbox within your account if you would like to customise your settings.

Please remember, your default settings will enable AntiSpam and AntiVirus on your accounts - so if you're happy with these settings, you won't have to do a thing!

What is AntiSpam?
The Email AntiSpam filter is a free service that helps protect your email account and the people using it from annoying and offensive emails.

How effective is AntiSpam?
This network-level solution, provided by Symantec Brightmail, will prevent approximately 95% of these email messages from reaching your account. Symantec Brightmail offers the best accuracy rate in spam filtering technology, which means that only one in every one million email messages has the chance of being incorrectly filtered!

How will AntiSpam work?
As a default, spam messages sent to your account will automatically be deleted before reaching your Inbox. You have the choice of turning iiNet's Email AntiSpam filter "on" or "off" at any time. If you would prefer, you may choose to tag and receive all incoming spam messages by following the easy steps above to customise your service.

What does Spam Tagging mean?
When spam passes through iiNet's Email AntiSpam filter, it will be detected and marked (or tagged) with the words "SPAM" in the Subject line. This email will then be delivered to your Inbox with your other email messages. As the spam messages are conveniently tagged, this enables you to scan your own spam messages and delete or read them as you see fit.

What is iiNet's Email AntiVirus?
iiNet's Email AntiVirus filter will automatically scan your incoming email messages for common viruses, Trojans and worms. If a known virus is detected, the email will automatically be blocked.

Why would I want to disable iiNet's Email AntiVirus?
If you're like most people, you don't want to receive annoying spam messages or dangerous email viruses. However, if you have a desktop solution that you prefer to use or you just like to filter your email yourself, then the modify or opt out option is available.

Is the Email AntiVirus 100% accurate?
At the rate that new viruses are developed these days, no anti-virus solution can guarantee 100% accuracy all the time. However, we've provided you with a free industry leading service from Sophos that is automatically kept up to date with the latest virus threats.

What level of protection do I receive?
This solution will protect your email account from harmful viruses. However, it does not protect your computer from viruses that can be passed on from other sources, such as infected disks or Internet downloads. It is recommended that you use iiNet's Email AntiVirus filter in conjunction with a personal anti-virus product, such as Norton Antivirus, to fully protect your system. A range of Symantec products including Norton Anti-Virus, Norton Personal Firewall and Norton Internet Security are available to purchase via Toolbox.

What software powers the AntiVirus service?
iiNet's Email AntiVirus filter is powered by Ironport Systems and Sophos AntiVirus.

What software powers the AntiSpam Service?
iiNet's Email AntiSpam is powered by Ironport Systems and Symantec Brightmail AntiSpam.

Are there any restrictions?
Our free Email AntiVirus filter and free AntiSpam filter cannot be used when email forwarding is activated on your account. To take advantage of these free services, please deactivate email forwarding using Toolbox.

Terms & Conditions

  1. iiNet Email AntiSpam and Email AntiVirus are server-level email-only filters. They are free services for all designated iiNet email accounts. These services will be activated on 15 November 2004. Spam and Virus settings will take effect on that day.
  2. Settings are specific to each mailbox. The default settings enable Email AntiVirus and enable Email AntiSpam to delete spam emails and virus infected emails. Settings can be modified by the customer at any time via Toolbox to disable services or to tag spam messages.
  3. Email AntiVirus and Email AntiSpam will be disabled if email forwarding is enabled. Disable email forwarding to take advantage of these security settings.
  4. iiNet's Email AntiVirus protects email accounts only. We recommend using a desktop anti-virus solution to protect your system from other means of infection. Symantec products including Norton Anti-Virus, Norton Personal Firewall and Norton Internet Security are available to purchase via Toolbox.
