What are some of the features unique to Android phones?

As Android is open source, handset manufacturers are not locked into building standardised phones. Here are some of the awesome features available on some Android handsets.

  • Replaceable batteries – great for long flights or multiple-day music festivals
  • MicroSD card slots – expand you phones memory, easily swap files and photos between your computer and phone and even your camera

Which handsets run Android?

Because Android is ‘open source’ it means that just about any manufacturer can use Android on their phones. The most popular mobile handset manufacturers are Samsung, HTC, Sony and Motorola.

Manufacturers can modify the interface for a specific look and feel, and even add little ‘extras’ over the top. For example, the Samsung Galaxy S III has a cool feature called Smart Stay which recognises when you are looking at the phone and prevents the phone’s screen from dimming or turning off. This is part of Samsung's Android 'skin' called TouchWiz.

Galaxy S III
50 million Samsung Galaxy S III handsets have been shipped globally since it launched in May 2012.

How do I download Apps in Android?

Because Android is developed by Google it’s tightly integrated with Google apps such as Gmail, Google Maps and Google Calendar. It’s also linked to Google Play which gives access to over 600,000 apps and games as well as a huge range of movies and e-books. All the popular apps are on Android such as Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Shazam and Words with Friends. There are even some awesome Android exclusive apps like free turn-by-turn navigation through Google Navigation.

 Google Play
Google Play is your ‘one-stop-shop’ for Android apps, movies and e-books

Do I need a Google account to use an Android phone?

A Google account is not required to use an Android device. You can use the phone to use pre-installed apps, make phone calls, take pictures and send text messages without a Google account. In order to use the Google Play store you will need a Google account. A Google account unlocks a lot of features with the phone, such as being able to backup and restore your contacts list. You can create a Google account from the device itself, or from your computer by logging onto Gmail (Google Mail).

How long has Android been around?

Android has been around for over 5 years and is constantly updated by Google bringing new, cool features each upgrade. And the guys at Google must have a sweet tooth because each new version is named after a dessert or candy!

Here are the sweet names that they have come up with (pun definitely intended):

  • Cupcake (version 1.5)
  • Donut (1.6)
  • Éclair (2.1)
  • Froyo (2.2)
  • Gingerbread (2.3)
  • Honeycomb (3.2)
  • Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0)
  • Jelly Bean (4.1)

Most mobile handsets currently run on Gingerbread or Ice Cream Sandwich. Jelly Bean is the latest iteration of the operating system.

Do you offer insurance with your handsets?

We won't be selling insurance plans with our handsets.

Network & Coverage

Which network delivers the iiNet Mobile service?

iiNet uses the Optus Dual Band 3G network, which covers 97% of the Australian population.

How do I find out if I'm in an area supported by iiNet Mobile?

To check if your area is within the coverage area, simply click here or call our Sales team on 13 19 17.

How accurate is the Coverage Map?

There are many factors which can affect availability, so while the Coverage Map does show overall coverage in an area, it is not 100% accurate. Such factors include:

  • Line of sight between you and the nearest mobile tower
  • Location of nearest mobile tower
  • Composition of your premises (brick walls, tin roof, etc)
  • Amount of other users in the area
  • Overall capacity of nearest tower

Hardware

What mobile hardware does iiNet provide?

You can purchase a mobile handset from iiNet, or you can opt to receive a SIM-only service. Keep in mind that some providers may lock a handset to their particular network. To check if your handset is locked, please contact your existing provider.

What SIM cards do iiNet provide?

iiNet provides dual-cut SIM cards which can fit most current mobile handsets. If you have a device which requires a Nano SIM, iiNet can provide those on request.

What part of the dual-cut SIM card do I use?

Please check your handset's user guide or contact the handset manufacturer. Any SIM cards which need to be re-ordered will cost an additional $20.

Are there any upfront costs?

For all iiNet Mobile services, there is an upfront SIM card charge of $20.

I already have a SIM with another provider, do I need an iiNet SIM?

Yes, you’ll need an iiNet-supplied SIM card to use the iiNet Mobile service.

Is my current mobile handset compatible with an iiNet SIM?

iiNet Mobile SIM cards will work in unlocked handsets which meet the requirements for use with Australian 2G or 3G networks.

For those tech-heads, your phone will need to support the 900Mhz and 1800Mhz frequency for 2G coverage and 2100Mhz for 3G. Your phone may support multiple frequencies so check your user guide for more information.

If you need help getting an iiNet Mobile SIM working with your handset, call us on 13 22 58.

Will my 2G handset work?

Yes, but only in 2G coverage areas. To check coverage, click here.

Does iiNet support BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) or BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS)?

No. BlackBerry smartphones require arrangements between the customer, iiNet, Optus and RIM (the makers of BlackBerry) which have not been developed as yet.  We know that many of our customers have BlackBerry phones, so we hope to make this service available in the future.

Will the Blackberry phone work with the iiNet SIM?

Yes, in a limited fashion. You will be able to make and receive calls and SMS, but BlackBerry specific services such as BlackBerry Internet, BlackBerry Messenger and BlackBerry E-mail are not available.

Accounts, Billing and Usage

Can I sign up to iiNet Mobile without having any other iiNet services?

To be eligible for an iiNet Mobile service you must have an iiNet residential or business internet service.

To sign for one of those products, simply head to our signup page.

What if I cancel my internet service with iiNet?

iiNet Mobile service is directly linked your internet access service and the Toolbox application. Because of this, you cannot continue your iiNet Mobile service if you cancel your existing internet access service.

How can I track my call and data usage?

Your iiNet Toolbox will contain all information about your usage and how much included value is remaining in your current billing month.

IMPORTANT: All data and call usage may be delayed by up to 48 hours. International roaming charges may take up to 90 days to be received and logged against your service.

All data usage will be displayed in the hour that the data session ends.  For example, if you begin a data session (browsing the Internet, checking e-mail, using applications, etc) at 1:35pm, and conclude the session at 2:25pm, all data usage for that session will be included in the 2:00 - 3:00pm view in Toolbox, and the 1:00 - 2:00pm column will show no data.

Can I change plans?

You can change your iiNet Mobile plan at any time via Toolbox for no additional fee. The change will take effect within 24 hours. We will calculate pro-rata charges from your old plan to your new plan, which will appear as adjustments on your next bill.

What happens if I exceed my data allowance?

Once the included data allowance in your plan is reached, excess data will be charged at 20c/MB (charged in 1 kilobyte increments).

Will I be notified before I exceed my included value limit?

iiNet is required to notify you by e-mail and SMS once you reach three separate stages of included value usage:

  • 50%
  • 85%
  • 100%

We will also notify you when you start to exceed your included plan value. These notifications take place once you exceed your cap by:

  • $50
  • $100
  • $150

By default, once you exceed your included cap value by $200 we will restrict your Mobile Voice service. This amount can be altered to an amount that better suits your usage needs, by calling us on 13 22 58.

IMPORTANT: All data and call usage may be delayed by up to 48 hours. International roaming charges may take up to 90 days to be received and logged against your service.

How does iiNet invoice me?

Invoices are available electronically from Toolbox and sent out via e-mail each month.

Your monthly plan will be charged in advance, with any excess calls or data usage will be charged in arrears.

Our mobile plans are charged on a calendar monthly basis.  This means that if you are on the $10 plan, you will have $165 call and text value and 200MB of data to use between the 1st days of each calender month.

When activating a new mobile service, you are charged a pro-rata fee to bring you in line with the end of the current calendar month.  If you activate halfway through the month, you will only be charged 50% of the monthly access fee.  As you are only charged 50% of the monthly access fee, you will also be given 50% of the included call and data value.

Example: You activate the service on the 10th of December. You will be charged 21 days worth of access fees for the month of December.  As you are only being charged a partial month, you will also get a partial month in call and data usage (21 days worth of calls and data, in this instance).

Am I locked into a contract on my iiNet Mobile plan?

No. There are no contracts associated with your iiNet mobile service, but you may have a contract associated with your iiNet broadband or other iiNet service.

If you choose to purchase an iiNet Mobile handset on an installment plan, if you decide to cancel your Mobile Voice service you will also be charged the remaining installment payments in full.

What happens with my monthly access fee upon activation of iiNet Mobile?

Once your new SIM card goes active you will be charged a pro-rata fee of your monthly amount to the end of the current calendar month. For example, if you activate the service on the 10th of December, you will be charged 21 days worth of access fees for the month of December.  As you are only being charged a partial month, you will also get a partial month in call and data usage (21 days worth of calls and data, in this instance).

For a full list of what is included and excluded in your monthly allowance, click here.

Are 1800, 1300 and 13 phone numbers included in my monthly included call value?

Yes. Calls made to 13/1300/1800 numbers are covered by the included call and text value on all business and residential plans.

How is data charged?

Data charges are in increments of 1 kilobyte. Both uploads and downloads are counted.

How do I set up international roaming?

Before you enable international roaming, it is essential that you read and understand the charges and rates applicable to your destination country. To locate the specific rates and charges of the country please visit Mobile Voice International Roaming

After you have read and understood the applicable rates you must contact iiNet on 13 22 58 to request activation of International Roaming.

There are two lengths of time that roaming can be activated for:

Permanent

  1. Contact iiNet on 13 22 58 to request activation.
  2. We will request you to verbally agree to the terms and conditions applicable to international roaming.
  3. As part of this process, we will perform a credit check, as the enabling of international roaming represents a significant risk on iiNet's part. This takes between 1-3 business days to complete.
  4. If you pass the credit check, we will request that our wholesaler enables international roaming on your service. You will receive an SMS confirmation once this has completed. This process can take up to 2 hours to complete.
  5. To disable international roaming, you will need to call iiNet on 13 22 58.

90 days

  1. Contact iiNet on 13 22 58 to request activation of international roaming.
  2. We will request for you to verbally agree to the terms and conditions applicable to activating international roaming.
  3. We will request that our wholesaler enables international roaming on your service. You will receive an SMS confirmation once this has completed. This process can take up to 2 hours to complete.

For instructions on how to disable data roaming and e-mail updates for common smartphones please view our Advanced Tips page

How long will my iiNet Mobile service take to activate?

When you receive your new SIM you will need to login to Toolbox to activate the service. If you are taking up a new mobile number, your activation should occur between 2 to 72 hours after you click “activate” in Toolbox.

If you are porting an existing mobile number, the porting process is dependent on the service provider you are moving from. This porting process can take between 2 to 72 hours.

How will I know when my service is active?

If you are activating a new number you will know when your SIM is active when it displays ‘iiNet’ on your handset. The signal strength indicator on your phone should also show you have coverage (provided you are in a coverage area).

If you are porting an existing mobile number you will know the porting process is complete when your existing service ceases to work. At this point you should insert your new iiNet Mobile SIM into your device, which should work straight away.

If you have any questions about this process, please contact our Support team on 13 22 58.

I have activated my service via Toolbox and waited 48 hours. I still have a “No Service” message on my handset. What now?

This will usually be rectified if you turn your device off, then on again. If this doesn’t fix the problem, please call us on 13 22 58.

Can I take up a business mobile service if I don’t have a business internet service?

You can take up an iiNet business mobile service if you have a registered ABN. As with all mobile services you must be an iiNet broadband customer (residential or business).

Are iiNet to iiNet calls free?

Particular plans have a separate allowance for calls made between iiNet Mobile services. Once this allowance has been used, calls are charged at the standard mobile rate. Plans without this allowance charge iiNet mobile to mobile calls at the standard mobile rate.

How do I change the settings for my mobile service?

This can be done by logging into Toolbox. From here you will be able to see and modify all aspects of your iinet Mobile service, with the exception of international roaming.

What are my APN Settings for my iiNet Mobile service?

If you are using an Apple iPhone, the setting is “yesinternet”. For other devices it is “internet”.

Refer to your phone user guide on instructions on how to configure your APN.

Can I tether my phone?

By default, all iiNet mobile plans have this feature turned on so if you have an Apple iPhone or similar device you should be able to use this feature straight away.

Tethering allows smart phones like the Apple iPhone to act as an access point, allowing a computer to access the Internet.

Keep in mind that when tethering, the data used is counted as part of your monthly mobile data allowance. It's a good idea to keep an eye on how much you're downloading to avoid excessive charges.
