iiNet offers two choices of hardware:
The USB modem has the same look and feel as a Flash drive. It can be connected directly to a USB port, or fitted to a USB cable for greater flexibility.
The MobiiHotspot comes in both 3G and 4G flavours. The 3G device allows for 5 devices to access a 3G connection over Wi-Fi, while the 4G allows connections for up to 10 devices to access a 4G or 3G signal depending on coverage in your area.
A USB dongle will require a built-in USB port. The current list of supported operating systems are:
The hotspot will require your computer to have a Wi-Fi device in order to connect to it, such as a built-in wireless card. If it doesn't have one, you could use a Wireless Extender.
At this stage, built-in mobile broadband with laptops is not something iiNet is able to support.
While we sell stand-alone 3G and 4G SIM cards, only Optus-approved Huawei modems are the only approved modem devices, as they have been tested for use on the Optus network.
No other modems are accepted at this stage.
Check out our support resources page.
Currently the BoB™ hardware range isn't compatible with the iiNet 4G Mobile Broadband service . We are working with manufacturers to see if this may be possible in the future. If you are looking for a mobile backup option for your fixed-line broadband connection and need it shared between multiple computers, the MobiiHotspot may be just what you need.
All 4G devices sold by iiNet are backwards compatible, meaning that they are capable of connecting to the 3G or 2G network if necessary. Generally the modem will try to connect to the fastest network available to deliver the best speeds.
A 4G network has the potential for much faster internet connectivity than a 3G service. This means that large files will be downloaded significantly faster on the 4G network. It also means that streaming video will be smoother and you will experience less buffering. Check out our speed comparisons.
You'll need a compatible modem (either the 4G USB dongle or MobiiHotspot) and a 4G plan. You will also need to be in an Optus 4G coverage area. Don't worry - if 4G isn't in your area yet, you can still use the 4G hardware and connect using the 3G network.
Apple iPads are not compatible with current Australian 4G networks. Australian 4G networks utilise the 1800MHz frequency, whereas the iPad utilises 4G networks operating on the 700MHz and 2100 MHz frequencies. Apple lists the 4G network compatibility of the iPad through specific carriers in the US and Canada only.
4G SIM cards can be inserted into an Apple iPad with mobile data capabilities, and operate on the 3G network where available.
iiNet utilise the Optus Dual Band 3G and the Optus 4G Mobile Network. It delivers 3G access to 97% of the population in Australia using the 900/2100 Mhz network bands. Optus' 4G network is currently available in Perth, Sydney, Newcastle, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and the Gold Coast, with more areas coming soon.
Customer service, technical support and billing will be provided by iiNet. Optus is solely iiNet's wholesale partner and network provider.
Coverage maps are available on our website. When using the coverage maps, select the type of network that you would like to check for. All iiNet 3G Mobile Broadband devices are capable of connecting to the "3G Dual Band Network". When using the maps, you can browse areas by using the map, or look for a specific address by using the "Please enter address here..." field in the top right corner.
The coverage maps are updated directly from Optus, and represent the areas of Australia covered by their Mobile Broadband networks. While the coverage maps are updated regularly and are accurate, it is worth remembering that many variables can affect the performance of Mobile Broadband. The number of users, distance to mobile phone towers, the construction of the building you are in and the buildings around you, and other factors can affect the speed of your Internet connection.
At the moment, the Optus 3G network covers 97% of the population in Australia. Optus currently plans to continually upgrade sites to allow for 4G connections.
The network is constantly being monitored and upgraded to ensure the best experience for customers.
There are several factors which could affect the speed/quality of the signal, including:
While mobile broadband services are certainly not pushovers, they aren't comparible to most standard ADSL or ADSL2+ services. If you require high speeds, big download quotas or a service which has generally consistent stability, mobile broadband may not be for you. That's not to say mobile broadband isn't reliable, but remember; there are many factors which can affect the signal strength and therefore performance of your mobile broadband service, some of which aren't apparent until the service is connected.
There are no roaming charges with iiNet Mobile Broadband. The service only operates on Australian 3G and 4G networks, and isn't capable of roaming onto any carrier but Optus.
International roaming is not available with iiNet Mobile Broadband. The devices however are 'unlocked' and if a foreign country uses the same mobile network technology as Optus, the iiNet Mobile Broadband device may be able to be used outside of Australia with a SIM card purchased in that country.
If you are not happy with the speed or coverage at your primary residence within the first 10 days after service activation, you are able to return your service. Contact iiNet on 13 19 17 for more information.
If you want to use your iiNet Mobile Broadband service for tethering purposes, you will need to give our Support team a call on 13 22 58. This feature is not enabled by default so we will require your verbal consent for this to be turned on.
iiNet does not recommend using tethering as a regular form of internet access. Please be aware of the excess usage charges for your plan before proceeding.
Of course! Customers who bundle their broadband or landline phone service with their mobile broadband service will receive a discount on their monthly plan. Give our Sales team a call on 13 19 17 to find out more.
Yes. Depending on your current provider, we may need to provide you with a new modem, but you can certainly join us.
Certainly, your Toolbox will allow you to keep a close eye on your data usage.

No, once the quota is exceeded your service will remain at normal speeds and excess charges will begin.
Excess usage is charged at 5c per MB on 3G mobile broadband plans. 4G plans charge at 2c per MB.
All iiNet internet services are eligible to receive one primary email address plus up to nine (9) additional email addresses free of charge.
3G Business customers are able to purchase a static IP. Head to our Business site for more information.
Static IP addresses are not available for 4G plans at this stage.
Currently Mobile Broadband services are not eligible for un-metered content in the iiNet Freezone. We are looking for ways to provide even more value and content to our Mobile Broadband customers in the future, so stay tuned!
Bills are available electronically from Toolbox and are also e-mailed to customers. Your invoice will contain charges for all of your iiNet services.
Backup dialup is available with iiNet Mobile Broadband services.
