What happens after you enter?

All eligible entries in the People's Choice category will be hosted on this web site, where the public will be called on to vote for their favourite animated film. Voting opens 15 December 2008.

Finalists in both categories — People's Choice and Judges' Choice — will be screened during iiNet Films Afloat @ Darling Harbour. These films will also be featured in the iiNet freezone.

Finalists will be contacted in January for a high-resolution copy of their entry for screening at the event.

Winners will be announced on this website on 19th January 2009.

Judges' Choice
Films entered into the Judges Choice category will be judged by a panel of world renowned Australian animators including:

First prize: Trip for two people to the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France including flights, transfers and accommodation. Film shown at the Melbourne and London International Animation Festival.

Runners Up: 12 months free broadband from iiNet, 12 months subscription to Empire Magazine.

People's Choice

First Prize: An Apple MacBook Pro, 12 months free broadband from iiNet, Film shown at the Melbourne and London International Animation Festival.

Runners Up: 12 months free broadband from iiNet, 12 months Subscription to Empire Magazine.

Voters Prize
Just by voting, you can be in the running to win one of three PLAYSTATION 3 consoles and the new Little Big Planet Game.

Qantm Emerging Artist Scholarship
Qantm College will award a one year scholarship to the entrant of their choice.

Can anyone enter?

The competition is open to all Australian residents.

Is there a time restriction on submissions?

Yes — your animated film should be between 2 — 5 minutes in duration, including titles and credits. Any films submitted that are over 5 minutes will be automatically withdrawn.

Is there a theme?

No — you can be as creative as you like with no boundaries, except those stated in the official rules.

What format should the film be in?

Either H.264 or Windows Media format, contained in an AVI, QuickTime or WMV file.

Can iiNet help me make a film?

Unfortunately, no — we cannot offer the hire of film equipment, facilities or anything to assist you in creating your film.

What film specifications do I need to follow?

Your film must be submitted through our online entry form. If you wish to submit via hard copy, please email us at getanimated@iinet.net.au (please note the same file restrictions apply). If you are picked as a finalist, you will be contacted for a high-resolution version of your film on DVD.

Is there a prize for the winning films?

We have loads of great prizes to give away. Check out competition details for what you can get as a winner or finalist.

What happens to my film following the awards?

Finalists for both competition categories will feature during iiNet Films Afloat @ Darling Harbour as part of Sydney Festival 2009. After the festival, iiNet retains the rights (until 2010) to place the films in the iiNet freezone for all iiNet customers to enjoy.

What if I am picked as the winner, but don't live in Sydney?

As the winner of the Judges' Choice prize, you will be flown to Sydney to receive your prestigious award. We'll even throw in two nights' accommodation.

Will the finalists in each category be flown to Sydney to receive their runner up prizes?

No — only the winner of the Judges' Choice will be flown to Sydney.

Can I work with a group to submit a film?

Yes, you can work with as many people as you like, however it is up to you to decide how to split any prizes you win. Please note — some prizes are not easily split.

ADMINISTRATION

The iiNet Get Animated Competition has been developed by iiNet in conjunction with Sydney Festival. It is intended to promote and encourage as many animators as possible to submit films as part of the competition.

REGISTRATION AND KEY DATES

ELIGIBILITY

The competition is open to all Australian residents. All of the entry requirements outlined below must be adhered to in order to eligible to enter.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

All films must meet the following requirements and specifications:

  1. Films must be animation, excluding the opening and closing credits.
  2. Films may only be 5 minutes or less in total running time, including titles and credits. Any films submitted that are longer than 5 minutes will automatically be withdrawn.
  3. Films must have been produced within the last 3 years.
  4. Entrants must be the sole author(s).
  5. Submitted material may not contain obscene, unlawful or objectionable material. iiNet reserves the right to refuse any entry to its competition.
  6. The film may not contain any sexually explicit, disparaging, libelous or other inappropriate content or language. It is at the discretion of iiNet to deem what content is considered inappropriate.
  7. By entering, filmmakers grant iiNet and Sydney Festival the right to showcase their films during and after the competition until 28 February 2010 at venues or through media channels.
  8. Only films submitted prior to midnight (EST) on 8th December 2008 will be considered by the final jury.
  9. The animation submitted must be qualified by the National Censorship Board as (M) or less.

In the event that more than one person or group has participated in the production of the film submitted for entry, the film will be deemed the property of the person whose name appears on the registration documents submitted with the film. This same person will be acknowledged as the winner if the film they have entered is declared a category winner. Please note that certain prizes are not suited for groups of more than two persons.

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

Works submitted for selection must be submitted in H.264 or Windows Media formats.

DEADLINE FOR RECEIPT OF FILMS FOR SELECTION

Copies of works submitted for selection must be uploaded online prior to midnight on 8th December 2008 (EST). Films submitted after this date will not be accepted. Blank entries will not be considered or given the opportunity to be resubmitted.

SELECTION

Each entry is considered for the People's and Judges' Choice Categories. A world class team of industry judges will select the judges' choice winner. The people's choice winner will be decided by voting carried out on the official competition website.

The same film can not win both the Judges' Choice and People's Choice Awards. If this situation arises, the Judges' Choice prize will be awarded and the next most popular film will be awarded for the People's Choice.

NOTE

All works submitted for selection will be made available to the general public to view and vote for during the span of the voting period of 15th December — 3rd January 2009. The short listed films selected by the judges and voted for by the public will be screened for the five nights of iiNet Films Afloat @ Darling Harbour as part of Sydney Festival 2009.

COMPETITION JUDGES

The submissions will be judged as follows:

  1. Judges Choice Award: Judged by a panel of industry professionals including Suzanne Ryan, Anthony Lucas, Fergus Linehan, Rob Deane, Brian Green, Judy Morris, Tim Brook Hunt and Malcolm Turner.
  2. People's Choice Award: Voted by the Australian public.
  3. Qantm Emerging Artist Scholarship: Judged by Qantm College.

COMPETITION PRIZES CONDITIONS

The winner of the judges' choice, if not a resident in Sydney, will be flown to Sydney to collect their award on January 18th, 2009. Two nights accommodation and flights will be provided as part of the winners prize.

The first prize for the Judge's Choice award consists of return flights for 2 people to London (flights must be booked at least 6 weeks in advance of travel dates and are subject to availability at time of booking — flights need to be redeemed in 2009), 2 return train passes and transfers to Annecy, 5 nights accommodation in Annecy and 2 nights accommodation in London (first and last nights of trip)— Please note, "spending money" is not included as part of the prize. iiNet to confirm all details after Sydney Festival 2009.

iiNet broadband: The prize comprises of 12 months free broadband access including waiving of standard broadband set-up costs (up to $150) and modem. The winner does not have to sign a 24mth agreement. The winner can select any iiNet broadband plan up to the value of $39.95 per month. The total maximum prize value is $1000 (depending on the relevant set-up fee) and this will be credited to their iiNet account upon activation.

VOTING AND JUDGING

All animations will be available for the public to view and vote on from 15th December — 3rd January 2009.

You can vote for your favourite film once a day using a valid email address. Votes generated by script, macro or other automated means or any other means intended to impact the integrity of the voting process are void.

THIRD PARTY RIGHTS AND CLEARANCES

All films must be the original work of the entrant and must not infringe upon the copyrights, trademarks, rights of privacy, publicity or other intellectual property or rights of any person or entity.

PROMOTIONAL USE OF WORKS

The entrant grants iiNet and Sydney Festival the right to screen their film during Sydney Festival 2009. The Media Partners of the Sydney Festival will also have access to show your videos on their sites, namely:

ACCEPTANCE OF REGULATIONS

By agreeing to and submitting the entry form for the iiNet Get Animated competition, the participant accepts, without reservation, the terms of the present regulations as stated in this document.
