DSLAM stands for Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer.
Let's give you a short bit of history to help explore the meaning of this odd sounding word.
In 2004, we began constructing our own broadband network - the iiNetwork. Why'd we do this? Well to be honest, we were fed up with waiting for the big phone companies to increase broadband speeds in Australia.
To build this network, we got a whole bunch of DSLAMs and put them into telephone exchanges across Australia (we've now got DSLAMs in over 300 exchanges). A DSLAM is a special device we use to connect you to the net and each DSLAM can connect up to 288 customers via a series of ports.
The copper line that runs from your phone socket to your exchange plugs in to a DSLAM port which is where the magic happens.
To keep it simple, DSLAMs = fast internet.
