How do email addresses work?

Emails are sent through your internet connection to your Internet Service Provider (ISP). iiNet operates a large farm of mail servers which handle the sorting and delivering of all emails coming in and out of iiNet.

When you send an email it goes from you > ISP > destination, all in a matter of seconds! At iiNet, we currently process over 15 million emails per day!

That's how email addresses work, so what is an email address made up of? An email address is made up of 2 main things, which are separated by an @. For this example we will use the email address johncitizen@iinet.net.au

Everything to the left of the @ describes who you are. johncitizen@

And everything to the right of the @ describes where you're from (or where your email lives) on the net, this is also called the domain. @iinet.net.au

The @ symbol is pronounced at and is used to say johncitizen is located at iinet.

More detailed info on email addresses is located in our iiHelp section.
